Homecoming week at Talladega College is more than a celebration — it’s a living part of our history. Every year, it aligns with Founders’ Week, making the tradition even more significant. This year, as we celebrated 158 years of Talladega pride, we also welcomed hundreds of alumni back home while honoring the strength, culture, and creativity of our current students. Across campus, more than a dozen events brought everyone together for a week filled with unity, excitement, and reflection.
To capture the spirit of Homecoming, we asked a few students what this time of year means to them. Alivia Martin, a sophomore from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, shared, “Homecoming to me is the act of welcoming back alumni and being able to celebrate, reflect, and enjoy the week.” That sentiment truly became the heartbeat of 2025 Homecoming — celebrating where we come from while embracing who we’re becoming.
Homecoming Convocation
The Homecoming/Founder’s Day Convocation served as a powerful opening to the week, featuring influential voices such as President and CEO Dr. Willie L. Todd, Executive Vice President and Provost Dr. A. Clifton Myles, and keynote speaker Dr. Daniel Black. Together, they established a tone of reflection, empowerment, and forward movement.
Dr. Black delivered a compelling and deeply intentional message rooted in liberation, courage, and self-determination. His central theme was simple but convicting: do not wait for approval to create change. Revolution, he reminded the audience, is not something granted — it is something claimed.
Through vivid storytelling, Dr. Black traced the historical and present-day struggles of Black people, showing how moments of progress and setbacks alike have shaped a remarkable legacy of strength. He encouraged students to see these challenges not as weights, but as building blocks — tools to carve out their own revolutionary paths. His words urged everyone in attendance to make purposeful, confident moves without hesitation or the need for permission.
What began as a traditional convocation transformed into a moment of collective awakening — a reminder that meaningful change begins within, and courageous leadership starts with the decision to act.
“Echoes of the Greek” Step Show
As the crowd quieted into an electric hush, the anticipation inside the venue became almost tangible. It was finally time for one of Homecoming’s most anticipated events: the Step Show.
Three powerhouse fraternities stepped up to claim the stage — Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, and Alpha Phi Alpha — ready to compete not just in rhythm and power, but in creativity, precision, and storytelling.
Alpha Phi Alpha’s Alpha Beta Chapter opened the show with their theme, “Back to Cornell,” honoring their historic 1906 founding. Their performance blended tradition and innovation, transforming history into a high-energy, modern showcase that held the audience from the first stomp to the final pose.
Next were the Ques of Omega Psi Phi’s Gamma Psi Chapter, who charged onto the stage with an explosive QFC (Que Fighter Championship) theme inspired by UFC. Their performance was intense, theatrical, and impossible to ignore. Bold choreography, sharp transitions, and commanding stage presence kept the audience on their feet.
Finally, the Nupes of Kappa Alpha Psi’s Gamma Gamma Chapter closed out the night with a cinematic heist-inspired performance. Precision, storytelling, and signature Kappa swagger came together in a flawless routine that left the crowd — and the judges — in awe.
When results were announced, the verdict was clear: the Nupes claimed first place, securing the Step Show crown with a routine that was clean, creative, and unforgettable.
What began with silence ended in a full eruption of cheers — a night that lived up to every ounce of hype and carved itself into Talladega Homecoming history.
Battle of the Bands
Talladega College came alive with energy as the legendary Great Tornado Band went head-to-head with the electrifying Hounds of Sound in a Battle of the Bands that had the stands packed with students, alumni, and community supporters.

The Great Tornado Band opened with a performance grounded in discipline, tradition, and musical excellence. Their brass section carried the stadium, their drum cadences echoed with precision, and every formation highlighted the legacy that has long made the band a symbol of Talladega pride.
The Hounds of Sound responded with fresh energy, modern flair, and high-impact entertainment. Their setlist mixed contemporary hits with fan-favorite classics, bringing a dynamic presence to the field. Sharp movements, standout solos, and crowd interaction made their performance unforgettable in its own right.

As the night continued, the competition grew into something bigger — a celebration of our music culture, school spirit, and creative tradition. Whether cheering for the soulful depth of the Great Tornado Band or vibing with the bold rhythms of the Hounds of Sound, the crowd experienced two distinct but equally powerful expressions of HBCU pride.
In the end, it didn’t feel like a rivalry — it felt like one collective celebration of sound, legacy, and community.
The Fashion Showcase
This year’s Homecoming fashion showcase brought style, creativity, and school pride to the forefront — woven directly into the step show. Between each fraternity performance, the runway took over the gym, turning the night into a live fashion editorial.
Hosted by Talladega’s own fashion organization, Stylish Threads, the show featured three categories: School Spirit (sponsored by the Talladega Spirit Store), Streetwear (sponsored by Sky Blue Inspirational Clothing), and Fall Fashion.
The School Spirit segment opened to Alright by Victoria Monét. Models walked in cardigans, leather jackets, sweaters, and T-shirt dresses reconstructed from bookstore tees. The looks blended a vintage feel with modern creativity, showing how students can transform simple pieces into something bold and personalized.
Streetwear followed, set to Who Is You by NBA YoungBoy. Models hit the runway wearing Sky Blue Inspirational Clothing and other custom pieces — embellished denim, reworked sweaters, beanies, and beaded rosaries. The category captured the essence of youth culture, individuality, and Talladega swagger.
The showcase closed with Fall Fashion, set to Delresto by Travis Scott and Beyoncé. The vibe shifted to sleek and editorial, featuring knee-high boots, furs, leather, berets, and distressed denim. The runway lit up with high-fashion energy and an elevated autumn aesthetic.
For the finale, all the models — along with Stylish Threads’ Creative Director and President, Emme Hall — returned to the stage. The audience erupted, and the show closed with a clear message: Talladega’s fashion scene is not just stylish — it’s visionary.
Game Day Highlights
Homecoming Saturday was pure energy from morning to night. Both the Women’s and Men’s Basketball teams took the court for a thrilling doubleheader against Philander Smith. The women secured a well-deserved victory, pushing the excitement even higher for the day’s lineup of events.
Just outside, The Chi Chapter Alumni Association — known as The 20 Pearls Collective — hosted the Pink Smoke Kookout, filling the atmosphere with music, food, and fellowship. Meanwhile, the brothers of the Alpha Men Chapter (Alpha Beta Alumni) showcased their traditions and presence, adding to the cultural richness of the day.
From the games to the Greek unity to the cookouts and celebrations, the entire campus felt alive — an unforgettable snapshot of Talladega pride and community.
